The gap between the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors is only widening, even after the Warriors recently signed a former Spurs player. Former Spurs center Charles Bassey played five games for the Warriors last season and was recently re-signed to a one-year deal.
The Warriors brought him to provide depth behind Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford. The irony of them bringing Bassey back to provide depth at center in case of injury shouldn't be lost on Spurs fans.
Remember, the main reason Bassey didn't work out in San Antonio was because of injury. He fractured his patella in his second season with the team and then tore his ACL six months later, all but ending his time in San Antonio. Brutal luck.
Former Spurs Charles Bassey is now with the Golden State Warriors
Those are both major injuries that required significant rehab time. Bassey ultimately never found his footing with the Spurs despite showing impressive flashes.
He is still only 26 years old but has bounced around since leaving San Antonio, playing for three teams and now the Warriors in hopes of finding a new home. When healthy, he's a productive center who is a good shot blocker, rebounder, and decent around the basket.
He likely won't play a huge role in Golden State, even though he is backing up an injury-prone center in Porzingis and an aging big in Horford. In short, he doesn't project to move the needle much for Golden State. That highlights a larger problem for the warriors.
The Warriors' signing Charles Bassey comes with an ironic injury twist
Adding Bassey to a team that is already injury-prone seems like a questionable move at best. Remember, they will be without star Jimmy Butler as well as Moses Moody for most or all of next season.
They also have four rotation players who are at least 35 years old. Bassey doesn't fall under either category, but his injury history makes him a questionable choice for a third center.
Especially in a role that may require him to play a small but meaningful number of minutes. Still, Spurs fans should wish him the best. Had it not been for horrible injury luck, it's possible Bassey would be San Antonio's long-term backup center behind Victor Wembanyama.
Things eventually worked out for the best for San Antonio with them signing Luke Kornet and adding two 1st-round selections, Tarris Reed Jr. and Jayden Quaintance.
Who knows, maybe Bassey will find his footing in the NBA and emerge as a decent rotation player for the Warriors. It's just ironic that he is being used as a depth piece given his injury history in San Antonio.
