ESPN's Tim MacMahon says the Spurs aren't trading Harper or Castle, even in a blockbuster deal. That's what we want to hear. None of these guys should be traded from this team, especially not one of the young guards. It doesn't matter who you're offering. You can keep Giannis. You can keep Luka Doncic. I don't want them, and you shouldn't either.
The Spurs can build their dynasty without major moves
Some of you will think that I'm insane for that last part, especially, but adding Luka to a team means you have to completely change everything about your style of play. It also means you have a superstar who can't play defense. He was abused last night by the guards in question, and these are first- and second-year players.
Stephon Castle is an All-NBA-level defender in year two, and Dylan Harper is one of the best penetrators in the league in his rookie season. The Spurs see the vision clearly, and veteran journalists do as well. That's why you get a statement as powerful as the one MacMahon made in regard to this whole conversation. It's a long one, but it's all important.
"As you go into the trade machine over the next couple months here, don't bother putting Dylan Harper or Stephon Castle in any trades. If that means you can't come up with things to get some huge blockbuster done for the Spurs, I would say, 'yeah, that's right.' Those guys are going to be in San Antonio for a long, long time. I think they've got this generation's version of Duncan, Parker, Ginobili."
That last part should catch your eye because that's likely the exact lens the front office is viewing this team through. They've already done the heavy lifting by being a terrible team for all of those years. It netted them Victor Wembanyama, Harper, and Castle. That's the core right there. No need to mess with it. Just let them grow together.
San Antonio's trajectory is a familiar one
A Spurs fan made an astute point on social media about where the Silver and Black are in their journey back to a dynasty. They're sitting around the same spot where the Golden State Warriors were in about 2013—on the verge of homegrown greatness. The only thing they need right now is patience.
Funny enough, Harrison Barnes was on that Steph Curry-led team. Their biggest additions from outside that led to their first championship were a couple of veterans, Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut. San Antonio has already checked those boxes by adding HB, D. Fox, and Luke Kornet.
They have their young star core, led by an unfathomable monster that people still struggle with when they see him play basketball. The things that Wemby does on the court are unreal, and he's only in his third season. He's only getting better, but so are these young guys taking the league by storm. All Brian Wright has to do is let it happen.
