Lost in the celebration surrounding the San Antonio Spurs' Game 7 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder was a revealing comment made by Dylan Harper. Harper could be heard saying, “Hey! Hey! We got some get back for the cup!" referring to the New York Knicks, who the Spurs will be facing in the NBA Finals.
The Spurs lost to the Knicks in the NBA Cup Finals back in December, with a rematch in the NBA Finals giving this team the perfect chance to get some payback. It's good that it's on the mind of the Spurs.
Especially Harper, who had one of his best games of the season in the NBA Cup Finals loss. Obviously, the goal is to win a championship, but getting payback on the Knicks would make winning all the more sweet.
Dylan Harper reveals the Spurs want revenge for their NBA Cups Finals
San Antonio having added motivation to beat the Knicks hopefully means they will stay locked in. It could be easy for them to come out flat in Game 1 after beating their archrivals.
Hopefully, instead, San Antonio will be ready to pounce in Game 1. Better still, they will be starting off this series in a much better spot than they did last round. Remember, they didn't have De'Aaron Fox for the first two games of the Western Conference Finals.
Game 1 went to double overtime, resulting in Victor Wembanyama looking fatigued during Game 2 and Game 3. Worst yet, the Silver and Black had just one day of rest in between games.
Prior to the start of the NBA Finals, San Antonio will have three days of rest and two days off between before Game 3. Better yet, San Antonio will also be starting the NBA Finals with home court advantage. All of those things could work out in their favor.
Beating the Knicks in the NBA Finals would be doubly sweet for the Spurs
That NBA Cup Finals loss likely left a bitter taste in the mouths of many Spurs players. After all, they were outplaying the Knicks midway through the third quarter before Mitchell Robinson swung the momentum back in New York's direction.
He grabbed a staggering 10 offensive rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench, leading to plenty of second-chance points, many of them threes. Robinson is absolutely capable of dominating the offensive glass again.
However, it's important to note that Wembanyama only played 25 minutes in that game. If he played closer to 36 minutes, which is what he averaged against OKC in the Western Conference Finals, then the outcome of that game might have been far different.
The Spurs are hoping that will be the case. If they are able to beat the Knicks in the NBA Finals, that win would be doubly sweet for the Silver and Black, and they clearly have revenge on their mind.
