The NBA Draft Combine in Chicago is well underway, and prospects are starting to solidify their stock as the big night in June approaches. Morez Johnson Jr. has been a serious standout during the combine events, proving himself as a first-round-caliber player that the Spurs need to have on their radar with the 20th pick. Johnson would be a dream pickup for San Antonio.
Morez Johnson Jr. should be near the top of San Antonio’s draft board
The 2026 draft is unusually deep. Real difference makers are going to be found throughout the ranks of the class, so the Spurs absolutely have a chance at landing another young stud with their first-round pick. Michigan’s Morez Johnson looks like the gem they’ll be searching for.
Johnson’s combine week has been excellent so far. For starters, he measured in at 6’9” barefoot with a 7’4” wingspan and a 250 lb frame. The guy is a beast, and he’s a freak athlete for his size, too. He posted the fourth-best pro lane drill time at the combine, beating out speedy guards like Kingston Flemings and Ebuka Okorie, while also logging the 15th-best maximum vertical leap.
Johnson clearly looks the part of a good pro, and he plays like one, too. He was an integral part of Michigan’s national championship team this past season, posting averages of 13.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks while shooting 62.3% from the floor. The stats don’t even tell the full story, though, because they don’t quantify his biggest strength: his defense.
The power forward is one of the most impactful defenders in the class. He’s unbelievably versatile, using the size and speed he’s showcased at the combine to swarm and smother all five positions. Johnson is as tough as they come in general, a competitor in every sense of the word who affects the game positively every night, regardless of whether he has two points or 20.
Johnson is exactly what the Spurs will be looking for
San Antonio’s frontcourt is on the smaller side, at least besides the obvious alien in the room and Luke Kornet. Johnson would bolster their size in a major way while also accentuating the Silver and Black's strengths of defense and interior scoring. On top of that, it can feel like the Spurs are missing toughness and edge sometimes, but adding Johnson would patch that hole.
With the way he’s popped at the combine after a super-impressive season at Michigan, it’s very possible that Morez Johnson won’t be available when the Spurs are finally on the clock. If he is, though, San Antonio should be all over that.
