Of all the standout performers this season for the San Antonio Spurs, Devin Vassell was their most underrated, unsung hero. He's been a quiet yet essential factor behind this team's 62-win season, one of their best in a decade.

Now, it's very easy to forget about his impact with all the headlines surrounding Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and others. But this team simply cannot do without Vassell's offensive contributions.

He averaged 13.9 PPG, making it his fourth consecutive season of double-digit scoring. Now, this number won't totally catch your eye on the stat sheet, but make no mistake, San Antonio needs every bit of the scoring punch that he provides if they want to make a deep run in the postseason.

Devin Vassell made a massive sacrifice this season

The collective unselfishness that the Spurs displayed this season needs to be studied. So many players on this roster willingly stepped into roles, whether large or small, that created a net positive for the team. Whether it was an All-Star guard cutting down shot attempts or a lottery pick coming off the bench, San Antonio operated with an "us" instead of "me" first mindset.

That's especially true for Devin Vassell. In October of 2023, he signed a $146 million rookie contract extension and looked ready to make a leap as an All-Star-level scorer. In that 2023-24 season, he averaged just short of 20 PPG on elite shooting splits.

But as the Spurs' front office made additions such as De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, Vassell saw his role get noticeably smaller in the offense. The 19.5 points he averaged in 2024 turned into 16 the next season and 13 this season.

Regardless, he accepted this new role as more of a complementary scoring option without any complaints and has been an important piece in San Antonio's elite offensive attack. It won't come with any individual awards, but Vassell's selflessness kept this team functional this season.

Vassell's shot creation is a must for a deep playoff run

Every team with title aspirations needs a reliable set of shot creators who can break down defenders when things get tight. Whether it was the Thunder in 2025, the Celtics in 2024, or the Nuggets in 2023, perimeter creation is a non-negotiable for a lengthy playoff run.

While he's taken a cut in his shot attempts compared to previous years, this is a standout trait for Devin Vassell. He's one of the best on this roster when it comes to finding his own looks off the bounce, using his creative handle to disengage defenders and get into his signature pull-up jumper.

He was lethal in the mid-range area this season, draining 48% of his looks, which is well above league average. He knows his spots very well, and he can get to them whenever he wants. Guaranteed, this will be something to keep an eye on in clutch scenarios for the Spurs this postseason.

Devin may not be this team's highest scorer, but his offensive impact will be felt this postseason. It could also be the ultimate difference maker in a number of the games the Spurs have ahead of them.
