Devin Vassell's Dylan Harper comment is everything Victor Wembanyama will hate

Victor Wembanyama probably didn't love that Devin Vassell told the media how Dylan Harper was feeling.

Devin Vassell recently made headlines for his post-game comments about Dylan Harper after the San Antonio Spurs’ Game 5 loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. He claimed that Harper was unhappy about his role and playing time. But that’s the exact type of comment Victor Wembanyama will probably hate to see.

Wembanyama seems like the type of guy who wants to keep things in-house. He wants to cultivate a positive environment for not only the team but also the fanbase. And something like this being told to the media isn’t really conducive to that sort of environment. It’s messy.

But now, it’s out there.

The Spurs were unable to get the job done in the NBA Finals. It was an impressive journey to get there, highlighted by a seven-game series victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals. But at the end of the day, San Antonio came up short.

For a lot of the series, Harper looked like the Spurs’ second-best player. He was elite at driving to the bucket and creating offense from the perimeter when the Spurs needed it.

But at the end of a lot of the Spurs’ games – in the NBA Finals, in particular – the ball was in De’Aaron Fox’s hands more than almost anyone else’s. And perhaps that’s what Vassell was getting at when he mentioned Harper’s issues with his role.

Fox was rough. In Game 5, FOx shot 3-of-15 from the floor and 1-of-8 from deep range. Had he stepped up on offense during the series, perhaps the Spurs could have won a title.

Meanwhile, though Harper wasn’t always consistent, he was better than Fox. Yet it still felt like Fox had the ball in his hands more than Harper when the moment mattered most.

Harper is still super young. Just a rookie (or technically, not anymore). Fox is a veteran. A former Clutch Player of the Year winner. But still, it felt like Harper should have had the ball.

But regardless of that. Regardless of reality. Regardless of what happened. Vassell probably should have kept that tidbit to himself. Harper may not be a fan of it.

Wembanyama is the clear leader in San Antonio. He’s the guy for the Spurs. And based on the way Wemby has conducted himself as the face of the Spurs franchise, he’s probably not too thrilled, either.

For the most part, it’s usually best not to let the media in on things like that.
