Victor Wembanyama had a lesser night than he did against the Mavericks. Or did he? The 7’5” black hole blocked 10 shots, despite the robbery from the stat keepers telling you he only had nine. Spurs fans will remember a similar mistreatment occurring for another San Antonio legend. Tim Duncan once famously notched a triple-double that should have been the league’s fifth-ever quadruple-double.
In Game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals, The Big Fundamental put up 21 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists, and eight blocks, officially, but everyone with eyeballs knew that the officials missed two blocks for some reason. I don’t know why blocks are so difficult for these people to keep track of, but maybe they should use AI for stat-tracking instead of trying to teach robots MMA.
Wembanyama was a monster regardless of the stat theft
Vic was a revelation again today, and it was interesting to watch after seeing him hit almost every shot he took against Dallas. He shot 71% in the season opener, and it looked so effortless, you almost expected him to continue the hot streak. That’s not reality, though.
However, what’s normal for him will not be normal for others, so coming down to Earth for him means scoring 29 points while shooting 57% and grabbing 11 rebounds. Wemby continued the trend of attacking the paint even though, credit to the Pelicans, they made it difficult for him to do so.
Many analysts are still figuring out what bothers the French superstar the most. You would think that it would be a larger size because he’s so tall himself, but there’s just not going to be anyone bigger than him, so that’s not it. He’s also built more muscle, so just being tall and strong won’t do it either. You can ask Anthony Davis how much good it did him to be as firm as he is.
Smaller and quicker players with good hands bother Vic more than anything. It’s more difficult to get into his ballhandling bag against those guys, and you saw that tonight. He still found a way to keep his turnovers to zero and scored 29 points, but there was less of him showcasing his handles, leading to drives and dunks at the basket.
This is actually a good thing, though. Despite those challenges, he still found a way to put up big numbers with efficiency. It’ll be even more of a challenge for defenses to use that strategy when De’Aaron Fox is back because you have another scorer to worry about. But he can also make the game easier for Vic, getting him the ball in comfortable spots. The Spurs found different ways to be special, and that’s the mark of a good team.
