The acquisition of De'Aaron Fox changed the long-term outlook of this San Antonio Spurs team beyond a shadow of a doubt. Getting an All-Star caliber point guard alongside Victor Wembanyama was a huge win for the front office, and it was a move that will allow this team to be much more dangerous moving forward.

With that being said, the odds that San Antonio can make something out of nothing for the remainder of the current season feel increasingly low. After the news of Wembanyama being ruled out for the season and the update that informed us Gregg Popovich will not be back this season, it feels more and more like the Spurs are headed for the lottery once again.

That likely outcome will have big ramifications on De'Aaron Fox specifically as he evaluates how to handle his hand injury. Fox has been playing with tape on his hand since arriving in San Antonio, and many assume he will want to get surgery at some point to fix the issue. The biggest question being whether he would opt to get the surgery done in the offseason, or if the latest team news might influence him to do it now, which would presumably put him out for the rest of 2024-25.

Fox: "Unsure" if he'll get surgery before end of season

Fox was asked about this topic during his postgame availability after the Spurs' loss to the Detroit Pistons on Friday. "At some point we're going to have to sit down and get it fixed, because I'm not playing with tape on my dominant hand for the rest of my career," Fox said. When he was asked if he planned to get it fixed before the end of the season, he didn't commit one way or the other. "I'm not sure yet."

It feels very likely that Wembanyama's injury update will play some sort of part in Fox's decision, and he had only been given a couple of days to think about the situation when asked this question. This was likely not a cryptic answer, and he probably legitimately needs more time to seek opinions from doctors, the team staff, and evaluate his long-term situation to ensure he can be healthy going forward.

Fox has only played seven games in a Spurs uniform as of this writing, and he was just beginning to get settled and start learning how to play more optimally with his new teammates. It would be a disappointment to see him lose his momentum and have to take extended time away from the game, but fans in San Antonio will also certainly want him to ensure he is healthy for next season.
