It's official: the San Antonio Spurs and De'Aaron Fox recently agreed to a contract extension. On the second day that he was available to receive a max extension, Fox landed a 4-year, $223 million deal.

Fox is now under contract for the next five seasons, but the honeymoon phase is officially over. Fox will enter next season with a new set of expectations.

After all, he will be the team's highest-paid player next season, and his new contract is the largest in team history. There are also concerns about his fit next to the Spurs' top prospects, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

But, if he can be anywhere near as productive as he was over his last four years with the Sacramento Kings, then he could still provide value on his oversized new contract.

De'Aaron Fox has increased expectations with the Spurs

Although Spurs fans are loyal, they can also be critical if a player fails to meet their expectations. Fox will be making $57.5 million on average over the next four years once his extension kicks in, so they will have plenty of reason to.

That may be what it takes to keep a star, but it is sure to lead to increased scrutiny, too. If he struggles with consistency or doesn't gel well, best believe that he'll hear it from Spurs fans.

It will be difficult for him to live up to that max contract, but he won't necessarily have to play like a top-10 player to make it worth the Spurs' while. If Victor Wembanyama emerges as a top-5 player in the NBA or even a top-3 player, then Fox simply being a top-25 player might be exactly what the team needs.

Second options aren't all built the same; they don't need him to be Kobe Bryant. If he continues to be a highly productive offensive player who makes life easier for Wembanyama and a passable defender, then he should be worth the Spurs' investment even if he isn't a max player.

All told, Fox will have increased expectations after signing a massive contract extension. He may be overpaid. But as long as he plays at the same high level he played at during his peak and Wembanyama reaches his full potential, then Fox will be the perfect second option.
