Critics need to switch up their game plan when talking about Victor Wembanyama. His 32-point outburst in Game 3 proved one thing: he plays some of his best basketball when the doubters are at their loudest. It's worthless trying to count him out of a playoff series too early.
We all saw it; he wasn't at his absolute best in Game 2. He did score 29 points, but a handful of crucial fourth-quarter mishaps became the defining storyline of that night. This led many to question whether he was built for this NBA Finals stage.
Those concerns were preposterous. It's completely pointless to write him off after a few rough showings early on in a series. He has an amazing ability to identify his weaknesses and respond with strong performances in subsequent games. No one this postseason has been better at this than him.
Wemby's offensive attack was razor sharp in Game 3
If you were one of the few who saw the bigger picture in Game 2, you noticed that Victor Wembanyama started to find a real offensive groove for himself in the second half. It became very apparent that he was beginning to figure out the Knicks' defense, and he'd carry that into the rest of the series.
Monday night was an excellent display from The Alien, as he punished New York in a variety of ways. He was a presence on the interior, converting on a handful of strong rolls to the rim. His jump shot was also on point as he drained two out of four attempts from distance.
There was another sign that made Spurs fans happy. Wemby cut down on the turnovers significantly. He came into last night's matchup with 10 total giveaways in the series, one of which was the final knockout blow to San Antonio's hopes to win Game 2. That wasn't an issue for him on Monday as he committed just one.
There are still some areas for him to tighten up on, but the world is learning very quickly that Victor is the best offensive player in this series. That statement serves as a perfect pushback to the notion that the NBA Finals lights are too bright for him.
Wemby's ability to respond like this is a rare trait for young players
There aren't enough players in the league who, under the age of 25, can have the weight of the basketball world on their shoulders and still show up like Victor. Again, the doubters were loud after Game 2. He had to find the balance between drowning out the noise while making improvements.
He always remains calm, never overreacting or forcing himself to fire back at critics. The man goes out there and gets the job done. When his back is against the wall, he shines. Forget the age bracket he's in. There's a short list of players in the entire league who can operate like this.
Now, the job is not done. The Spurs are in it to win it, and they need to do what they did on Tuesday four more times if they want to bring home a championship. But one thing we already know is that Victor Wembanyama is built for this stage. There should be no question about it at this point.
