Crazy stat proves Wembanyama has already morphed into monster nobody saw coming

The Spurs have a superstar in the making in Wembanyama with a crazy stat that proves it.

The San Antonio Spurs are still a work in progress, but they have had several bright spots, specifically their superstar in the making, Victor Wembanyama. It's funny to think that he was initially criticized for his start to the season due to his lackluster offensive play.

Fortunately, he has come on in a big way, averaging 32.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks while shooting a ridiculous 42.9% from three on 11.7 3-point attempts per game over the last six games. His 3-point shooting has helped to unlock his game. Unfortunately, the Spurs haven't made the best of his dominant play, with them going just 3-3 in those six games.

That being said, his play in December proves that he has turned the corner and is in full-on beast mode. That is great news for the Spurs, who enter a brutal stretch to start 2025 with them also having the fifth-toughest remaining strength of schedule.

For San Antonio to weather that stretch, they will need him to be equally as dominant in January. If he is, then he should make his first All-Star team as well as solidify his case to be Defensive Player of the Year.

Wembanyama has gone from star to superstar for the San Antonio Spurs

If the season were to end today, the Spurs would be 10th in the West and in the play-in tournament. However, with Wembanyama emerging as a top-10 player this season, that seems far too low.

A big trade, plus Wembanyama's continued strong play, could allow them to challenge for a top-four seed, particularly with the Dallas Mavericks currently just four games ahead of them but without their best player, Luka Doncic, for a month.

It is definitely a possibility, but the Spurs will have to start turning those close losses into wins. Their last three defeats have come at the hands of three playoff teams: the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and Minnesota Timberwolves by a combined 10 points. Pulling out one or two of those wins would go a long way toward helping them make the playoffs.

Last season, a 41-41 record was only good enough for 11th in the West, while it took 46 wins to make the play-in tournament. That is a high bar for the Spurs to clear as-is, but if Wembanyama continues to play like he has recently, and with trade help, it's not impossible for them to make a playoff push this season.
