With Cooper Flagg formally inserted as the future of the Dallas Mavericks, his journey to the top has just begun. However, one player will stand in his way as the future of NBA: Victor Wembanyama.
Just like that, a new rivalry has been born. Two future NBA superstars, both in the state of Texas. We will be seeing a whole lot of these two for the next decade.
Flagg will be Wembanyama's biggest threat to future MVPs
For as long as Wembanyama stays healthy, he will be in contention for MVP. While players like Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continue their reign of dominance, they will eventually be phased out and pass the torch to the new generation. However, Flagg will be a part of this new NBA era of MVP competitors.
Wembanyama will always have an extra leg up with his absurd block numbers, but Flagg will still be competitive in that department. While it will be nearly impossible to rival Wembanyama in blocks, Flagg is still immensely impressive.
Averaging 1.4 blocks and 1.4 steals per game in college, Flagg will have a defensive case in the battle against Wembanyama. Regardless, both players will be engraved in All-Defensive teams for their entire careers.
Offensively, the race will be dead even. Both players are electric scorers, but will share the wealth with their All-Star teammates. Wembanyama will have second overall pick Dylan Harper, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle looking to score, while Flagg will compete with future Hall of Famers Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis.
Wembanyama and Flagg will be getting their fair share of buckets, but who will be able to put up more to win the award?
From here on out, the pair's race for the MVP award will be breathtaking. Two absolute competitors will duel to see who can win the award first. For the MVP, it will come down to who can put up the better stats and win more games.
The Mavericks will stand in the way of the Spurs title hopes
When it seemed like the Mavericks were dead in the water following the Luka Doncic trade, they have magically reemerged as title contenders. With Flagg leading the way, the Mavericks will be in the running for a long time.
Just as the Mavericks have arrived as title contenders, so have the Spurs. At the same time as Wembanyama and his crew hunt for their first championship since 2014, the Mavericks will be doing the same. With Harper on board and a deep cast of talent, the Spurs will undoubtedly find their way back into the playoffs in 2026. However, only one team can come out of the West.
While the Spurs already have the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves on their way to a championship, now, the Mavericks will be right in the mix. The Western Conference will be an absolute dogfight next season and beyond. Wembanyama must give it his all to take down Flagg and the remaining opponents.
Watching Flagg and Wembanyama battle it out with championship hopes on the line would be any basketball fan's dream. These two will undoubtedly cross paths in the future; it is only a matter of time until it happens. Watch out because Wembanyama and the Spurs' biggest competitors have just arrived.
