Clippers' nightmare may become Spurs' dream De'Aaron Fox trade scenario

In the aftermath of the shocking L.A. Clippers punishment, the San Antonio Spurs could take advantage with a blockbuster trade proposal. The Clippers suddenly find themselves without a first-round pick from 2028 to 2033.

That means that if they want to rebuild through the draft, they will have to trade their way into it. That could potentially benefit the Spurs, who have a first-round pick in each of the next seven drafts.

As a result, the Clippers would make for an intriguing trade partner, particularly if San Antonio is looking to offload star De'Aaron Fox. San Antonio has given no indication that they are looking to trade Fox.

Despite that, they will inevitably have to, given that he is set to begin a max contract. San Antonio will also eventually have to pay Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper.

Spurs and Clippers swap stars in blockbuster trade proposal

The proposed deal, first suggested by CBS Sports' Sam Quinn, would see the Spurs trade Fox and a 2027 first-round pick via the Atlanta Hawks to the Clippers. In exchange, the Silver and Black would receive Darius Garland. As far as proposed trades go, this is a fascinating one that may actually benefit both sides.

The Clippers, despite being in Los Angeles, likely won't be a free agent destination anytime soon. It's hard to imagine a star signing up to join a team that can't build through the draft or even make big trades without having access to their own first-round picks.

They are also entering a rebuild and maybe willing to take back Fox's undesirable contract to add a first-round pick. The Spurs have shown an unwillingness to move Fox, but the Clippers would be the perfect trade partner.

Would the Clippers and Spurs agree to the trade?

If the Clippers believe that the Hawks are destined to be a lottery team next season, it could be the incentive needed to make a deal happen. It's also worth pointing out that Garland, despite being younger than Fox, has a checkered injury history.

He also didn't play particularly well in the 19 games he appeared in last season for Los Angeles. Thus, they may not be married to the idea of keeping him.

San Antonio wouldn't be either if they were to trade Fox for Garland. He'd be a stopgap star point guard until they trade him again and promote Dylan Harper to the starting five.

At this point in the offseason, it's hard to imagine San Antonio making such a big move. But perhaps if Fox increases his trade value during the first half of next season, they could revisit such a move.

In the meantime, the Clippers will have to get creative with how they add assets to rebuild. San Antonio could be a perfect trade partner, just perhaps not this off-season.
