The San Antonio Spurs knew what kind of player they were getting when they signed Chris Paul over the summer. One of the greatest point guards of all time and simultaneously one of the most underrated players ever, CP3 brings certain intangibles to the table that other veterans simply will not.

Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle recently spoke on their vet teammate, praising his leadership and acknowledging how his guidance has helped them. Along with the rest of the roster, they helped honor Paul when he moved into the second spot on the all-time list for assists this past week.

Now, Chris is set to reach another remarkable historic achievement in short order. He currently sits at third on the NBA's all-time list for steals, but he is just 36 steals behind Jason Kidd. It will not be long before Paul jumps Kidd and claims second on this prestigious list as well.

Chris is currently averaging 1.4 steals per game for the Spurs. If he continues at that pace, he will pass Jason Kidd's 2,684 steals in 26.4 games. Looking at the schedule, that means he could set the record on or around San Antonio's Friday, February 7 road contest with the Charlotte Hornets.

CP3 will move into second all-time for steals soon

Considering CP3's longevity, it is far from surprising that he is close to setting this record. He was one of the best players in the game at his peak and during his prime years. But the way he has continued to stay relevant over time is largely overlooked.

When it comes to basketball IQ and knowing when to make the right play, there are maybe none better than Paul in the entire NBA. CP3 began his career with a sharp basketball mind. But now that he has been around the block more than a time or two, that mind has been molded into a razor-sharp blade.

That is one of the main reasons why he has remained more than useful even into the twilight of his playing days. Paul may not have been blessed with top-tier athleticism or considerable size, but he has made a career out of outsmarting his opponents on top of being one of the best playmakers of a generation.

Chris deserves every accolade coming his way. He has been a fantastic leader to this young Spurs core, and it is gratifying to see him play one of the final seasons of his career in such a good situation.
