Castle and Wembanyama may surpass Duncan and Parker in ways never thought possible

The San Antonio Spurs' elite one-two-punch of Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle is destined to accomplish something Hall of Famers Tim Duncan and Tony Parker couldn't.

Wembanyama and Castle are among the league's best dynamic duos. In fact, CBS Sports just named Area 51 the best duo entering the 2026-27 season.

Despite being a skilled one-two-punch in their own right, Duncan and Parker were never the best duo in the NBA. Part of that was Parker sharing playmaking responsibilities with Manu Ginobili.

Also, Duncan's peak was far earlier than Parker's, so their primes never matched up. That isn't the case with Castle and Wembanyama.

Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle are the NBA's best dynamic duo

Having Wemby and Castle be just one year apart in terms of both age and NBA experience isn't talked about nearly enough. Sure, NBA fans and Spurs fans know that this team has arguably the best young core in the league.

But having two players in their early 20s already be the best duo in the NBA is a huge deal. Both players are still far from reaching their peaks, and last season was really the first time we saw what a pick-and-roll between Wembanyama and Castle could do.

The results were devastating—to the rest of the NBA, not the Spurs; they loved it. Castle proved he can be a lead playmaker and is head and shoulders the best lob thrower on the team. That has made life easier on Wembanyama.

They have a chance to be Tim Duncan and Tony Parker 2.0

Wembanyama caught 89 lobs last season. That is a dramatic improvement from his rookie season when Wembanyama didn't have nearly as many good passers. Even just the threat of him rolling to the basket has helped the Spurs get plenty of open looks from the corners.

That has helped solve San Antonio's shooting problems, with them able to generate high-percentage corner threes to offset their questionable shooting elsewhere. The Wembanyama and Castle duo isn't just about running pick-and-rolls. Individually, both players are elite on both sides of the ball.

Castle is elite defensively, also at getting to the rim and finishing. He also ranked in the top-20 in free throws per game last season, a rarity for a 21-year-old guard. Generating high-percentage shots at the rim and easy points at the free throw line is a great way to become a star.

Wembanyama and Castle have a scary high ceiling

Not to be outdone, Wembanyama is the best defensive player in the NBA, and perhaps in NBA history. And while he is still developing as an offensive player—which is a scary thought—he still posted 25 points per game last season. If both players reach their full offensive potential, they could easily combine to average more than 50 points per game perennially.

Compare that to Duncan and Parker, whose best season saw them combine to average 39.4 points per game. On the other end of the floor, Duncan was obviously highly skilled defensively, though Parker wasn't particularly good in that area.

Castle and Wembanyama are equally matched on both ends of the floor and could far exceed Duncan and Parker in all areas if both players live up to their full potential. At the very least, they are clearly the best dynamic duo in the NBA at the moment.
