Who would we be if we didn't give out nicknames to our best and favorite players? A new duo deserving of a nickname is the youthful guard tandem of Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. As it stands, they are the "Slash Bros," but something tells me that nickname won't stick for much longer.
The "Slash Bros" have been doing a whole lot more than driving to the paint recently. The pair is evolving right before our eyes, becoming so much more than just a pair of great downhill guards. We have no other choice but to crown these two with a new legendary nickname.
Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle have made a huge improvement
One of the biggest knocks on both Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper has been the three-point shot. Neither of the two were great from three in college, and neither showed much improvement in the big leagues to start either. To truly catapult themselves into superstardom, they would both need to make strides as shooters. Well, as of late, they have.
In the month of March, Dylan Harper is shooting a blistering 60% from beyond the arc, while Stephon Castle is shooting 41.9%. The rookie has stayed on relatively low volume, but the sophomore has regained his confidence and is shooting from deep much more often.
I'm not sure what got into these two, but something has clearly changed. Perhaps it is the overall confidence and momentum that the Spurs have been building. Or, in the best-case scenario, the pair has each figured things out, and this will be a sneak peek into what is to come in the future. Either way, we are loving it.
The "Slash Bros" upgrade will pay dividends for the Spurs
Not only is this duo now worthy of a new nickname, but they are also fueling a Spurs team that is looking to compete for an NBA title. If these two are playing like this, then the league should be frightened.
Their ability to knock down shots opens up everything. For the starting lineup, Castle becomes so much more of a threat. He not only opens up lanes for him to slash, but he also gives De'Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama space to operate inside. If teams can no longer sag off of the growing guard, the Spurs offense will explode.
The same goes for the bench unit. Dylan Harper's emergence gives him an extra layer to his already gifted offensive skill set and makes the secondary squad all the more deadly. With these two becoming real snipers, the Spurs' lone weakness evaporates.
With all of that being said, what do we call this pair? The "Matrix Twins" has flown around; I love that one. In a chess-themed idea, they could be named the "Castle and Rook." If you are part of the Spurs community, I beg you to help us give these two a new name because they deserve it.
