Carter Bryant didn't exactly turn heads in the Spurs' first Summer League game in Vegas, shooting just 4/13 from the floor and 1/7 from distance. It was an underwhelming performance, but his post-game comments showed that he's carrying the perfect mindset throughout this experience.
"Losing is unacceptable," he stated. "Especially like that, especially for this franchise. I'm going to be better as we move forward." For a contender, these are the exact words that you'd want to hear from one of your most important young players.
The Spurs just came close to capping off a wild playoff run with a championship. They know the finish line is within reach; now their focus is to make sure their players are developing to keep up with the rest of the league. Carter's mindset proves he's on the same page, recognizing this Summer League opportunity as a time to polish his game for next season.
Complacency is the only thing that can stop the Spurs
The worst thing for the Spurs' young core is to get too comfortable with last season's success. Don't get me wrong, what they did was impressive and deserves celebration, but it's important that they continue to move forward and build off what they learned from that experience. Given Bryant's comments, we may not need to be too worried about him getting complacent.
He's taking the Summer League as more than just a few meaningless games that don't count towards his career stats or record. It's a chance for him to grow even more as a two-way player, which is exactly what the Spurs need next for next season.
It's also imperative that Bryant set an example for the others on the roster. He's a role player in the regular season, but he's considered somewhat of a veteran in the Summer League. It's his job to set the tone on this stage so rookies like Tarris Reed Jr. can understand the importance of taking advantage of this opportunity to grow.
It's good that Carter doesn't get hung up on one bad game
Carter's ability to move forward after a rough performance is a great example of his maturity. He doesn't get too hung up on bad games or moments; instead, he sees them as lessons he can apply moving forward.
That's a direct result of being in such high-stakes scenarios as a rookie. During the playoffs, he wasn't allowed to get too low on himself after missed shots, turnovers, or fouls. That experience is molding him into a better player, and we're going to see it in real time as the Summer League moves forward.
Yes, Carter does need to sharpen up on a few things. But Spurs fans should be extremely impressed with his mentality and how serious he's taking this opportunity. It's definitely a sign of great things to come.
