Who should the Spurs target?

The San Antonio Spurs could look to shake things up this summer by trading for a star, but which trade target is the most realistic?

Any possible trade for a start would surely have to include De'Aaron Fox. By now, his star status should be revoked after a C-level playoff run and an F-level NBA Finals performance.

Armed with his massive salary and several first-round picks, San Antonio may go star shopping this summer to offload him and to improve their roster. Next, we'll take a look at three star trade targets ranked from realistic to pipe dream

Spurs trade target: Kevin Durant

Nearly one year after almost trading for Kevin Durant, the thought of possibly adding him this summer may not be popular among Spurs fans. Here's why trading for him now would make sense for San Antonio.

Durant, despite being a bit of a diva, would actually be a terrific fit on the Spurs. Even at 38 years old, he is a safe bet to drop 27 points on elite efficiency. Contract that with Fox, who averaged 18.6 points during the regular season and 16 points during the playoffs.

Swapping out Fox for Durant would give San Antonio a true 1A co-star for Victor Wembanyama. It would also pave the way for the Spurs to start Dylan Harper at point guard alongside Stephon Castle.

Better still, Durant can become a free agent after next season. In the scenario that San Antonio trades for him, they may be willing to let him walk. Doing so would allow them to get out from having to pay Durant as well as having to pay around $180 million to Fox.

The probability in which this trade would have happened is relatively low. Nevertheless, it's not out of the question considering San Antonio nearly traded for Durant last offseason.

Spurs trade target: Michael Porter Jr.

Now I know what you all are going to say: "Michael Porter Jr. isn't a star. " That is true, but he certainly played like one in Brooklyn last season, averaging 24.2 points and shooting 36.3% from three on 9.1 3-point attempts per game.

He is definitely a polarizing personality, but his breakout season with the Nets revealed his potential to contending teams. If the Spurs were desperate to get off Fox's contract, they could offer their 20th pick in this year's draft and the 2031 pick swap they own from the Sacramento Kings for Porter Jr.

That might be an overpay for a player who has had plenty of injury issues. However, that trade would give San Antonio a big wing who can shoot the leather off the ball.

It would also allow them to get out from under Fox's max contract and pave the way for Harper to start, which seems like a reasonable move.

Spurs trade target: Giannis Antetokunmpo

By this point, it seems virtually impossible for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo to end up on the Spurs. However, we'll put it at a 1% chance. After Fox flamed out in the playoffs, the Spurs desperately need to restructure their roster.

Would a three-team trade work? One where Fox gets sent to a team in need of a point guard as well as a pick or two and sends salaries such as Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Stephon Castle to the Bucks.

That would gut San Antonio's depth by trading four players for Giannis, though it would still leave them with Dylan Harper, Giannis, and Wemby. It's a thought, though probably not a realistic one. That is unless the Spurs are able to swap Fox and three or four first-round picks for him directly with Milwaukee.

In that case, the Spurs couldn't say no to that, right? Barring that, Giannis probably won't be playing in San Antonio next season.
