Blockbuster De'Aaron Fox trade proposal adds more confusion to Spurs' backcourt

What's new? Another De'Aaron Fox trade idea was pitched online, this time by Jonas Gendvilas of BasketNews. The proposal sends Fox and Luke Kornet over to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford. While intriguing, it further complicates their backcourt situation.

Now, Irving and Gafford definitely have things to offer to San Antonio. Kyrie's one of the greatest one-on-one scorers to ever play the game and has proven it countless times in the playoffs. Daniel's size and athleticism make him a perfect placeholder for Wemby when he's resting on the bench.

But the Spurs have the luxury of being picky with blockbuster trades; they're in no rush to bring in another star or add more to their roster. This is definitely a transaction they should steer clear of.

A Kyrie Irving addition comes with a lot of risks

You're not going to find a bigger fan of Kyrie Irving than me. I, along with millions of other hoop nerds, have spent countless hours watching and rewinding footage of his otherworldly offensive skill set. But that doesn't mean I can't be honest. Sure, his expertise would be a good addition to San Antonio's scoring attack, but he doesn't help solve their backcourt logjam.

Right now, one of the Spurs' top priorities is making space for Dylan Harper to develop into the star he was drafted to be. The young guard was stellar in his first playoff appearance, so San Antonio's coaching staff should focus on striking a balance among him, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle.

Replacing Fox with Kyrie comes with several complications. For one, he's older and has struggled with health and availability for a while now. So you can't help but wonder if he'll have enough time with Harper and Castle to develop chemistry before the playoffs start.

Additionally, Kyrie could take the ball out of Harper's hands... a lot. While he's done a good job meshing with other stars throughout his career, the veteran guard is still pretty ball-dominant. For Spurs fans who complained about Dylan's offensive role in the Finals, this trade wouldn't offer the best solution.

The Spurs also don't need more backup big men

If Luke Kornet were the only backup center option for San Antonio, a Daniel Gafford addition would be very attractive. But this summer, their front office did a great job deepening their interior rotation by drafting Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr.

It's safe to say the Spurs are fine with their depth at the five. When he's available, Quaintance can become a terrifying rim protector in non-Wemby minutes, and Reed is itching to come in and make an immediate impact himself.

Sure, Gafford has a few years of playoff basketball under his belt, but Mitch Johnson has a knack for getting the best out of inexperienced players.

There's one glaring truth in all of this: the Spurs don't need to rush themselves into any major trades. They already have a stacked roster that's deep at every position and impressive chemistry to match it. Centering a move around an aging star who's struggled with health only makes things tougher.
