Bismack Biyombo has been healthy all season, yet he's only seen the floor 14 times. He mostly hangs out on the bench, encouraging his teammates, because he's a great guy. However, this is a business, and the Spurs are going to need bodies who can play games and contribute. Hopefully, Mason Plumlee gives them that.
Plumlee can take over the role Biyombo was supposed to play
Shams Charania just reported the addition to San Antonio's roster, and while his deal is only a 10-day contract, I have hope that it's only the beginning. This is a great team, but it's far from perfect. They could still use some shooting, and their frontcourt depth is questionable once you get past Luke Kornet.
Jeremy Sochan's departure opened up this spot, so I don't expect Biz to be waived right now. However, adding a player like Plumlee when you already have Biyombo on the roster is a slight to the Congolese big man. They're basically the same player, but one is legitimately 7'0" tall, and he can catch the ball when his teammates dish him an easy pass.
Bismack isn't on the team for his offense, but this isn't football. Players have to play on both sides, and when he's on the floor, scoring becomes much more difficult. As for the defense, it's fleeting, at best, and that's likely a product of being an older 6'8" center who has primarily relied on his athleticism to deter drivers. It's simply not enough anymore.
The Spurs will need the added size in the playoffs
Mason isn't going to come in here and light it up, by any means, but I trust him to catch and finish around the rim more than I do Biyombo. His height is also a valuable asset in this defense. With aggressive guards and wings on the perimeter, the goal is always to funnel opposing ball handlers into the shot blockers in the paint, and Plumdog Millionaire can still turn back attempts at the rim.
Now, he's also an elder statesman, even older than Biz by a few years, but he's still better at the things San Antonio needs out of their backup backup center.
There are only 28 games left in the season. The playoffs are close, and if the standings stay as they are now, the Silver and Black would have to play the Nuggets in the second round (granted both teams make it out of their openers, of course). It would be nice to have an extra 7-footer to throw at Nikola Jokic.
Plumlee can sign two 10-day contracts before the Spurs have to either release or sign him for the rest of the season. I anticipate seeing Mason representing the 210 for the rest of the season's journey. The offseason is another story. Who knows if he'll stick around for next year's campaign? I can't imagine Biyombo staying either, though. They basically just admitted they can't use him.
