It only took Dylan Harper three preseason games to get fans and critics excited about his potential with the San Antonio Spurs. Harper displayed a surprising poise, unusual for a 19-year-old point guard, proving that he has more than enough talent to be a future superstar.

NBA analyst Bill Simmons agrees, with him singing Harper's praises after he averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 assists in just 19 minutes over his first two games. Simmons went as far as predicting Harper will be "impactful," which is unusual for young point guards who often struggle to adjust to the NBA.

The fact that Harper is already turning heads is nothing but great news for the Spurs. They already look like geniuses for taking the best player available, with him looking like a future multi-time All-Star.

There are still questions about whether he, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle will gel, and there are even questions about whether Harper should start over Castle. However, Castle will start to begin the regular season, but Harper could quickly surpass him.

Dylan Harper has star potential written all over him

With Harper already flashing elite playmaking ability, the Spurs appear to have a huge advantage. Fox is a nightmare to deal with with the ball in his hands, thanks to his superior quickness, craft, and finishing ability.

However, Harper is more of a modern point guard who can effectively score and create with ease. That isn't to say that Castle doesn't have a high ceiling, but Harper is clearly the better prospect, even as a rookie.

As a result, the Spurs could quickly move Harper into the starting lineup and pair him with Fox. That would make for a scary talented backcourt, with Fox capable of averaging 25 points per game while Harper could eventually lead the league in assists.

Meanwhile, Castle could be the Spurs' next Sixth Man. He seems perfectly suited to be a third guard, who can sub in for Fox or Harper and occasionally play alongside them in three-guard lineups.

Dylan Harper could quickly emerge as a third star for the Spurs

The addition of Harper also gives the Spurs a fallback option. Of course, they have Victor Wembanyama, who could soon be the best player in the NBA, and Fox, who is a star in his own right. Nevertheless, they will need a third star.

Before Harper, Castle seemed like the most obvious third star, and he could very well be HIM. Then again, if he is more of a sixth man who can slot in and play multiple roles, he might max out as a high-end role player.

In that case, having Harper is all the more important. It gives them another shot at having a third star, but he is less of a lottery ticket and more of a coin flip in terms of likelihood of stardom.

All told, the Spurs have a potential star in the making in Harper. And if Simmons is right, he could make a major impact on the Spurs as soon as this season.
