For as long as the NBA has been in existence, there have only been four point guards to lead their teams to a championship, and one of them was Magic Johnson. In 2023, that number was only three, so nobody outside of New York batted an eye when Becky Hammon stated, "If your best player is small, you're not winning," in response to a question about Jalen Brunson's viability as a 1A star.
Annoyingly, those comments have been festering in the psyche of Knicks players and their fans for nearly three years, so now that they've won, they won't let it go. NY stans flooded social media with smoke for Hammon (like she's active on X or something). Even Josh Hart has called for an apology from the 3x WNBA champion head coach of the Las Vegas Aces.

Crowd: "BECKY"
Josh: "…to say they was wrong about someone who led our team to a championship…I know they have media availability so we'll be waiting for that apology"@Roommates__Show at MSG on ESPN pic.twitter.com/zcl5IrQbNE
Of course, he has plausible deniability as he never said Hammon's name specifically, but we know who he's referring to. Well, I hope he doesn't hold his breath waiting for it.
Hammon con’t: “I mean, he was that 1A dude, but like, apologize, I'm never gonna apologize for having an opinion, that's what ESPN pays me for.”

Becky Hammon doesn't owe Brunson and the Knicks squat
The class act that she is, Hammon complimented Brunson pretty heavily here. While she's right about putting his name next to Steph Curry and Isaiah Thomas, nobody would actually compare Jalen to those players. Not because he's not a star, but he just needs to put together a stronger resume for a longer period of time.
One championship doesn't make you a legend. He may be a god in New York, but it will take much more than a one-off championship against one of the youngest teams in the league to stamp him on the level of top 50 players of all time, like Curry and Thomas.
The Chef is considered the greatest shooter of all time and boasts four Larry O'Brien trophies. Zeke nabbed back-to-back titles in an era when the Magic, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan were dominating the league. He was the leader of one of the most epic units in NBA history: the Bad Boy Pistons.
Brunson and his squad beat an underwhelming Hawks team, Joel Embiid with no knees, and James Harden on his way to meeting a premature Victor Wembanyama in his first playoff run. All credit to the Knicks, but the stars did sort of align for them to break their 50-plus-year championship drought.
Nonetheless, the former Spurs' assistant coach was gracious with her statement, but she doesn't owe anyone an apology, and she just made it clear they won't be getting one. So, scream into the void all you want, but if you know anything about Hammon, she won't give a damn.
