The name "Becky Hammon" is nothing but gold in San Antonio. If you ask players past and residents alike about the former Silver Star, you'll hear nothing but praise for the former guard. The 210 had a WNBA franchise in the city for 14 years (2003-2017), and Hammon was there for eight of them(2007-2014). So, her relationship with the city goes back a long time—way before he joined the coaching staff as an assistant.
She continues to nurture that relationship today even as the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces, so it wasn't a surprise to see she attended an event at the Salvation Army in San Antonio. Hammon participated in a Q&A where she was asked many questions by local reporters, to which she answered graciously.
She had several interesting things to say, but her comments regarding the possibility of coaching the San Antonio Spurs are what grabbed my attention. While she acknowledges her happiness in her current situation, Becky also left the door open to the opportunity to coach the Silver and Black if she were to receive the call.

Becky Hammon should be first in line if Popovich retires
First of all, Coach Popovich is still the head coach of the Spurs, and I'm thrilled about that. He'll only return if he's 100%, and if he makes that decision, the team will be better for it. However, it's prudent to acknowledge that he's 75 and the possibility that he'll retire is real.
Hammon's admission of rejecting interviews for other teams is telling when paired with her statement of basically waiting for the right opportunity "from the right people." San Antonio may not be the only place that fits that description, but I'd be willing to bet that they're on a short list.
She's currently coaching a two-time MVP in A'ja Wilson, and they have won the championship in two of the last three years. The former Spurs assistant coach has only held her position for three seasons, so that's an absurd level of success in a very short time.
Hammon was the first woman to be named head coach in the Summer League in 2015. San Antonio won the Las Vegas Summer League tournament that year. She's shown up prepared to win everywhere she's been, and she'd bring that same drive to the Spurs.
Her achievements shouldn't surprise anybody, though; former Spurs center Pau Gasol spoke glowingly of her years ago, stating, "I'm not saying she can coach pretty well. I'm not saying she can coach enough to get by. I'm not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA's male coaches. I'm saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period."
If Coach Pop doesn't return next season, all options are on the table. Fans have been split on Mitch Johnson, but the organization is likely to consider him strongly. However, if they can pry Hammon from Sin City, they should throw the bag at her and even call up her best friend, Tony Parker, if they need some help convincing her.
