Another Wembanyama stunner leads Spurs to historic night for franchise
Victor Wembanyama is everything Spurs Nation could have hoped for and more. In his second year, this kid is already rising to the level of player you expect, not just good nights consistently, but great nights. That's not an expectation you normally put on the shoulders of a 20-year-old. But Wemby is showing he's not your average sophomore, and San Antonio is winning games because of it.
The French star is stacking stellar performances, making it difficult to pinpoint which one has been the best thus far. His 50-point barrage was just as amazing as his 25-point 5x5 game, which can only be challenged by last night's 30-point triple-double. Wemby put up another video game-like stat line with 34 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists, one steal, and three blocks.
He had another sweet performance from beyond the arc, going 5-9 from deep, and the rest of the team followed suit as they bombed threes all night, resulting in a new franchise record for 3-pointers made in a single game (23).
The Spurs are elevating because Wembanyama is blossoming
The Silver and Black have won seven of their last ten games, and while most of those wins have been against teams with a lesser record, nothing was guaranteed for the Spurs last season. They're closing games, making comebacks, and playing with focus, poise, and intelligence. After the game, Wemby spoke about his process when facing opponents and how important the video crew is to his work.
"Every time they've given me advice or content to watch, it's been very purposeful... teams have tried to guard us differently all season, and we've responded better and better." - Victor Wembanyama
He also mentioned that he's grown to request videos from previous matchups before playing the upcoming opponent. Seeing what worked and what didn't is something Wemby wants to know about.
He's a smart player, and when you pair a smart young talent like him with the veteran knowledge and experience of Chris Paul, you get magic.
CP3 ended the night with another double-double—13 points and ten assists from the Point God. Four of those were to Wembanyama. Paul's leadership was instrumental again for the Spurs, and all it takes is a reminder of last year's collapses to see the difference. He's brought an Uno Reverse card to Alamo City, and now the good guys are winning games they had no chance to last year.
This was another game where San Antonio found themselves down by double-digits, but they came back and pulled out the win anyway. They never hang their heads and get down on themselves when the other team makes a run. They just lock in and raise their game, especially in the fourth quarter.
The game has changed so much in the last decade. The number of threes teams shoot is ungodly, but when they go in, it's fun. The Spurs made 50% of their long-distance attempts against the Kings, and it was exciting to watch. That level of shotmaking is going to be a problem for opponents, and when Jeremy Sochan comes back, he'll have more space to slash and grab offensive boards.
This is the most exhilarating squad San Antonio has had in years, and it's only going to get better. That's exciting.
