4 Bargain free agents who could make the Spurs a more dangerous title threat

The Spurs don't have to make big moves. A small one could be the tipping point.

Now that the offseason is in full swing with free agency fast approaching, ideas are buzzing around like flies at a family picnic. Most of the takes have involved large names like Kawhi Leonard, mid-level players like Isaiah Stewart, and pipe dreams like LeBron James. Let's get reasonable here, though.

There will be free agents available who won't require the Spurs to make large trades or reshape their roster to create space. Sometimes, the most important signings are the ones that happen on the fringe, and San Antonio could shore up their margins by taking a look at who's out there.

This is not a ranking.

Jordan Clarkson

Clarkson's 2025-26 stats: 9 PPG, 45% FG, 33% 3PT, 72 games.

The case: Longtime Spurs fans are very familiar with Clarkson because he's both from the San Antonio area and he seems to love torching this organization when allowed. Maybe Brian Wright could get him to use his powers for good. Playing for the hometown team could be a jolt for the microwave scorer, giving Mitch Johnson an extra scoring punch off the bench.

Matisse Thybulle

Thybulle's 2025-26 stats: 6 PPG, 2 RPG, 43% FG, 40% 3PT, 30 games.

The case: Thybulle's injury history is extensive, but he wouldn't need to play major minutes in San Antonio. He'd be defensive insurance—a luxury signing. If he can get healthy enough to play 10-15 minutes when called upon, that'd be enough. The Spurs will already have a deep rotation of wing players, so if he can't stay upright, the team won't stumble.

Matisse has always been great at stealing extra possessions. He's a smart and athletic defender. Those attributes would be intensified with Victor Wembanyama cleaning up anything that gets past him.

Robert Williams III

Williams 2025-26 stats: 7 PPG, 7 RPG, 2 BPG, 71% FG, 59 games.

The case: First of all, Williams has the coolest nicknames in the NBA, possibly in sports. Time Lord would be a welcome addition to a team boasting other awesome monikers like Area 51 and the Slash Bros. Basketball-wise, he's one of the better backups in the league, and if he can remain healthy, he'd be a great option to add a cushion for their frontcourt depth while SA's top draft pick gets his knee in order.

Right now, the Spurs have Wemby, Luke Kornet, Tarris Reed Jr., and Jayden Quaintance as their true big men. It's a formidable group enough as is, but Jayden may not be ready to go this calendar year. If that's the case, an injury to one other guy puts San Antonio back in the same spot they were in last season, with not enough centers to play meaningful minutes. Williams could be a solution to that.

Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamukelashvili's 2025-26 stats: 11 PPG, 5 RPG, 2 APG, 52% FG, 39%, 80 games.

The case: Vibes. That's the main selling point here. Mamu left because he didn't get enough minutes, and he likely wouldn't get too many were he to re-sign. But he was tremendous in the locker room, and the fans loved him. The Georgian power forward just opted out of his contract with Toronto. He's expected to have a reasonable market, so this would be a long shot, but it'd be welcome.

He's still not the best defender, but the Spurs have shored up that side of the floor at so many other positions that you could minimize his struggles there. Mamu is still a connective passer and an efficient scorer. San Antonio has a clear hierarchy now and a chance to win a championship. Bringing him back for a chance to accomplish that with a group he's familiar with and cares about would be a fantastic story.

The other three are better basketball fits, but the locker room fit can't be undersold. There's a reason why the Silver and Black keep bringing back Bismack Biyombo, even though he doesn't really play. Any of these players could give San Antonio the extra edge they need to finish the job next June. And none of them would break the Spurs' pockets.
