Tre Jones fires back at disgruntled fan calling out the Spurs

The current Spurs roster is home to one of the most even-keeled groups of guys across the NBA. Seeing as how they recently posted the longest losing streak in franchise history and currently own the third-worst record in the league, they sort of have to keep their cool. But it’s more than that— even though Coach Popovich is known for his angry tirades (as seen in the video below), he preaches fundamental basketball and maintaining your composure to his players.

Pop implements a “do as I say, not as I do” coaching style. Though the Spurs have some colorful characters on the team (rookie Jeremy Sochan came into the league as a troll, both on and off the court), I think everyone in Silver and Black understands that this season is not the time for anything close to a LeBron James-style meltdown

So you can imagine my surprise when I woke up to Tre Jones clapping back at a fan on my Twitter timeline. I mentioned the composure of Spurs players; none fits that bill more than Jones. The individual who tagged Tre (along with teammates Keldon Johnson and Sochan) complained about the three missing a game in Detroit due to injury. He seemed to insinuate those players were healthy enough to get on the court and only sat out for “load management.”

Load management has become a hotly debated topic in league circles. We are seeing unprecedented numbers of missed games (only 11 guys played in every game last season). But it’s a sensitive topic. As Rafael Barlowe eloquently points out here, players are shouldering the blame in this debate when resting/sitting stars is predominantly a front-office decision.

It’s not shocking that this topic struck a nerve with Tre Jones, especially since all the young point guard wants to do is get out there and lace 'em up again. I can’t blame Tre for his response. He gets straight to the point in his Tweet: “I play every game I’m healthy.” Even in a down season for the Spurs, no one can qustion Jones’ effort one bit.

Tre, I believe I speak for all fans of the Silver & Black when I say that we’re excited to see you out there when you’re ready, but your health is the top priority. GSG!
