Tuesday, May 16, 2023 will go down as one of the most important dates in San Antonio Spurs history. After a painful regular season that included a 16-game losing streak, the Spurs won the lottery (literally) and were granted the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Victor Wembanyama is coming to San Antonio.
The seven-foot-five Frenchman is the most anticipated draft prospect since LeBron James came into the league 20 years ago. We all know how that worked out as LeBron set the all-time scoring record this season and will go down as one of the greatest players in league history.
Getting the first overall pick has completely changed the trajectory of the franchise and gives the Spurs one of the best future outlooks in the entire league. Not only is the team getting another potentially-generational big but the team is getting all of the positives that come with it (San Antonio is a free-agent destination again!)
Spurs fans knew just how much was on the line on Tuesday and all of the emotions — which were fueled by the third-worst season in franchise history — exploded once the Charlotte Hornets were given the second-overall pick in the draft. The reaction was like the Spurs just won the NBA Championship.
Spurs fans go viral for reaction to landing Victor Wembanyama
This officially should become the new go-to viral meme that sports fans turn to on social media. A clip from soccer fans in England exploding at a bar has been the standard for several years. That has now changed with this perfectly-insane reaction.
The best part is that this likely won't be the only time that Wembanyama causes Spurs fans to react in this manner. Wembanyama is as sure-fire of a prospect as we have ever seen and as long as San Antonio doesn't get in its own way (which it historically doesn't), then there is plenty of success coming on the way with Wembanyama as the franchise cornerstone.
This is an important date in Spurs history that these fans will be telling their grandchildren about. We will all remember this viral reaction in the Spurs' championship parade when Wembanyama is lifting the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
