The San Antonio Spurs will be the biggest winners on draft night. They assured that by winning the lottery and the right to draft Victor Wembanyama. It was their third franchise-altering lottery win, and this one had Spurs fans ecstatic as Wemby is the most-hyped prospect since LeBron James.

The franchise is already devising a plan on how to make year one a success. NBA Big Board’s Rafael Barlowe dropped the rumors (subscription required) that San Antonio wants to acquire a second first-round pick and veterans to round out their roster. They have cap space and are eager to build around the 7’4 French prodigy.

The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on June 22, and it will be a massive night for the Spurs. Getting Victor Wembanyama is gigantic, but San Antonio does not plan on being done there. What else should fans be looking forward to on Thursday evening?

5. Spurs draft a point guard

With Wembanyama going first overall, the mystery is gone, but San Antonio currently holds picks 33 and 44 overall. They would love to jump into the first round, and the Spurs could use some of their excess draft capital to do it. San Antonio currently holds six first-round picks from other teams plus all of their selections. They have more picks than they can roster, so do not be surprised to see them use some of that surplus.

The Spurs need to add a point guard this summer, and they should be looking for a young prospect in this draft. That will allow him and Wembanyama to instantly bond as the team's two rookies. Getting someone with a high basketball IQ that can set up the 7’4 big man is a must. Wemby can create shots, but the Spurs need a point guard running their offense.

The San Antonio Spurs should add a point guard to pair with Victor Wembanyama on draft night, and fans should cheer for them to make a strong move for a prospect the front office believes in.

Fans should not just be rooting for what San Antonio does on June 22, and this team heading into a rebuild could be massive for the Spurs.
