One of the most pointless NBA conversations that never seems to go away is the comparisons of players between generations. Debates rage over whether this player could play in that era and vice versa when the truth is a matter of circumstance.

Players build their style of play based on the time they are raised in. If they were raised in the era in question, they would craft their game in the necessary ways to be a productive player.

This is why it's unreasonable to simply say that players from the older generations couldn't play with the guys these days because many of them couldn't shoot the ball well enough.

Logically speaking, they would have worked on their shots more if that's how the game was played. So, when Ralph Sampson makes comments about Spurs' franchise star Victor Wembanyama and how he would struggle during Sampson's era because of the post-play, you just ignore it.

It's nonsensical.

It should be stated that this is likely not coming from a place of dislike or jealousy. Sampson has already graciously offered valuable advice to Wemby last season and shared his excitement about watching The Alien play.

It's simply something these guys seem to do because they take pride in the eras they played in, and they should. If the Wembanyama talk had stopped there, that would have been fine, but unfortunately, Sampson took things a bridge too far when talking about Bol Bol.

Wembanyama is not bound by the standards of ordinary players

You don't tell Kobe Bryant not to shoot the contested fadeaway; that's something you explain to Chase Budinger. You don't tell Steph not to shoot it from 30 feet away; that's advice for Jeff Teague. Bol Bol has been in the league for five years and has averaged over 10 points exactly zero times.

He and Wembanyama are not the same and should not be put in the same sentence, despite the hardheadedness of people like Shaq, who is known for not having the greatest takes anyway.

Everyone was aware of who Bol Bol was before he entered the league, yet the hype surrounding him was nonexistent. There's a reason why Victor was labeled as the best prospect in sports history.

Let's quit acting like all it took was height and the ability to dribble the ball. Hit intangibles are through the roof, and his ability on the court already has him in top-10 conversations going into year two.

Be for real.
