The San Antonio Spurs needed a significant shakeup after the way last season went. The expectation was that all of the returning players would take a step forward and with the addition of Victor Wembanyama, the team would see a noticeable improvement. That didn't happen for several reasons, but one of them involved the lack of direction on the floor due to a dearth of experience. The youngest team in the league played like the youngest team in the league.

It was no shock that the team got better as the season progressed. Their time together was starting to pay off, and the losing streaks got shorter and shorter. But it would have been negligent not to add a veteran this year, so the Spurs added the ultimate veteran, Chris Paul. He spoke about his desire to hoop in his introductory press conference, making it clear that he's not a coach, but make no mistake about it; he offers a wealth of knowledge that the youngsters will soak up.

Chris Paul's impact on the Spurs' defense will be noticeable

Paul is seen in the video above talking to some of the young players at his alma mater, Wake Forest, and there are a lot of things to love about his message. Everyone from fans to the hoopers themselves is enamored with offense, but defense is where there needs to be more attention to detail. The Spurs won 5 championships with defense as their calling card and Paul will help them get back to that with his direction.

Nobody expects CP3 to lock anybody up but being in the right place at the right time while instructing others to do the same is valuable. Defensive communication can be contagious, so expect that trait to rub off on the guys. Prior to Paul's arrival, the Spurs had a lot of parts moving without the proper coordination towards a shared goal. But the brain has just been added to Frankenstein's monster and now anything is possible.
