NBA's most annoying player makes grand Wembanyama statement and he's right
NBA players have been enamored with Victor Wembanyama since before he stepped foot in the association. LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant are all on record giving praise to the French sensation before he entered the league. They were right to do so. His rookie season was nothing short of breathtaking as he made his way through the struggles all young players experience, doing it while putting up insane numbers and giving fans never-seen-before highlights.
The San Antonio Spurs hit the Powerball when they picked up Wemby, and the sky's the limit. His second season is rapidly approaching and the predictions for what's to come are generally claiming he'll be a top 10 or top 15 player in the league this year. But the league's version of Batman's Joker, Patrick Beverley, has a much stronger stance on the matter.
"He's everything. Like you can't even put him in comparison with other people, he's the best player in the NBA next year." - Patrick Beverley
Beverley's claim that Wembanyama doesn't have a position is correct
In this episode of Pat Bev's podcast, he was asked to list his top five centers in the NBA today. When he omitted Wembanyama's name, his co-host questioned him, allowing the journeyman to unleash his unfiltered opinion about the league's most unique specimen. Wembanyama has the size to guard centers, the length and quickness to defend wings and the ball-handling skills of a guard. His touch is unreal, and his instincts are second to none.
A player like that cannot be constrained to one role; he's every position. Beverley mentions Joel Embiid as possibly the only other center who will even attempt a hesi-pull-up from three. It's unheard of, and it's game-changing. More athletes with a similar build will try to copy Wembanyama now that they see what's possible. It's how Wemby will change the game.
Last season, the Spurs often ran pick-and-roll actions with Wembanyama as the ball-handler and Tre Jones as the screener. Not even Joel Embiid does that. There's no doubt that fans can't wait to see that play run with Chris Paul setting the screen because when Wemby feeds him the ball around the free throw line with options all around him, it will put teams in very precarious situations. It's the inverted version of Steph Curry and Draymond Green's famous play.
Curry draws so much attention that when Draymond receives the pass, he's often open in the middle of the floor with favorable numbers to work with. At that point, he just has to make the right decision on where to go with the ball, and he's made a living off doing it. Putting Chris Paul in that spot will do wonders for the Spurs offense, and it will all be generated by the 7'4" alien running the show.
