Latest Hawks report highlights Spurs will receive massive payoff no matter what

The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly moving toward trading both Dejounte Murray and Trae Young. That scenario is beneficial for the San Antonio Spurs.

Atlanta keeps both players this offseason

This is not a strong roster, and adding Alex Sarr, given that he is their selection, would not make that much of a difference. They didn't make the playoffs in a weak Eastern Conference this year. Next season won't be much easier if the Sixers make another move, the Pacers improve, the Knicks get healthy, Giannis and Dame get an additional year together, etc.

There are so many factors that come into play for the other teams that have clearer paths to improvement. The Hawks need a lot to come together if they believe they can still compete with Murray and Young as their cornerstone pieces, despite skepticism that the duo could work before they took the floor together after the trade three years ago.

The result would likely be another bad year and a great draft position for the San Antonio Spurs. There are no protections on Atlanta's pick, so the Hawks should just shift and blow the whole thing up. Anything else is kicking the can down the road. It's their fastest path back to relevance. No matter what they do, the Silver and Black will be better for it.
