The San Antonio Spurs have had a challenging NBA season, but some bright spots for the franchise have been the impressive performances of Victor Wembanyama. He has exceeded expectations and continues to catch the attention of basketball legends who believe he has the potential to become the next mega-star.
One of these legends was Kevin Garnett, who, in a recent interview, had nothing but praise for the French rookie. In addition to stating that "if this is the worst we've seen of Wemby, strap on your seat belt and hold on," the 2008 NBA champion with the Celtics compared the potential of the next Rookie of the Year with the arrival of Shaquille O'Neal.
The praise didn't stop there for the former Boston legend; KG used the opportunity to equate Wemby's possible impact to that of Steph Curry, particularly because of the potential to revolutionize the way the NBA is played. Garnett also praised Victor's ability by stating that it's similar to watching Kevin Durant play but in the center position. This, in turn, will require new big guys to develop more ball-handling skills.
The San Antonio Spurs have not had the season they were hoping for. However, after witnessing the impressive skills of Victor Wembanyama, the growth of some talented players and the lessons learned this season there is a renewed sense of hope among Spurs fans. They are optimistic that next year will be significantly better than this one and if the front office can sign a key free agent, it will be off to the races.
