How Sochan and Wembanyama can form the best frontcourt duo in the NBA
San Antonio was fortunate to land Jeremy Sochan with the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. His length, poise, selflessness, and grit showed Spurs fans they should be excited about his place on the roster. Sochan's confidence level was as easy to spot as the Bat Signal at midnight in Gotham City. But not unlike the Caped Crusader, assistance will be necessary for the brutal battles bound to arise in the NBA. Fortunately, help is on the way.
The reality of Victor Wembanyama donning a Spurs jersey draws closer with each passing day. Endless possibilities bounce around in the minds of Spurs fans while anticipation continues to build. Pairing Sochan and Wembanyama will be a house of horrors for offenses once these frontcourt prospects fully develop. Their length alone would make the Fantastic Four's Reed Richards jealous. If you have seen the arsenal Wemby brings as a scorer, the nightmares do not have to stop on defense.
Let's get the obvious observation out of the way. Wemby must add muscle to his slender frame to bang bodies with the grown men running center in the NBA. The rigors of the lengthy 82-game season are reason enough to encourage physical development, but the idea of thumping around the paint with behemoths like Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic on a nightly basis makes that a necessity.
Sochan falls into this category as well. He has already shown his athleticism, scoring ability, defensive tenacity, and desire to improve. Bulking up his frame will allow him to get more physical with players who try to bully him, imposing his will on both ends of the floor. Thankfully, the Spurs have an entire staff of strength and conditioning experts dedicated to doing just that. There is no need to worry. They will do their jobs.
Some of the best frontcourts in the NBA boast that title because of their incredible versatility. When you have plus size and can do everything well on both sides of the ball, the rest of the league is bound to see you as a formidable force. Anthony Davis and LeBron James can defend, score, and run the floor. Sochan and Wemby have the tools to influence basketball games in a similar way, making them interchangeable in numerous aspects.
Both will need to improve their shooting, but they still have many advantageous aspects to their game. Wemby and Sochan have already shown to be more than capable of putting the ball on the floor to make plays for themselves and their teammates. They can also move their feet on defense and block shots. Basketball can be simple, and simply put; dynamic players are a handful to to deal with in the current era of positionless basketball.
LeBron and AD, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez, and Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley stand out as some of the best frontcourt duos in the NBA. But with King James on the decline, no one has a firm grasp of that title. The proper leadership, work ethic, and experience will allow Sochan and Wembanyama, two players with limitless potential, the opportunity to firmly establish themselves at the top of the mountain.
