Fan's Wembanyama story proves his fame is reaching superstar heights
It could not have been a quicker start for the San Antonio Spurs' slender man, Victor Wembanyama, to start reaching superstar status amongst his peers. In his rookie season, he came in and proved to everyone that he belonged and began to cement his name alongside some of the top players in the league.
When it comes to sports, there will always be those once-in-a-generation types of players whose fame reaches a global level. As a 20-year-old from France, his game has already been displayed to a wide range of people around the world due to his many years of competing in Europe. While his on-court play will be stellar for years to come, his attitude and brand off the court are already catching the eyes of those who aren't even fans of the game.
Victor's French pride has captivated all of his country
The basketball portion of the Olympic Games coming to a close on Saturday, August 10. Team U.S.A. will take on Team France for the gold medal, and there's been a lot of pressure on Victor to lead the team in his first Olympic Games in his home country. He's delivered, as he's averaged 13.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 2.0 blocks a game in his first go-around at the games.
Noam Netter, a 17-year-old high school hooper in France, discussed how he got into basketball through Michael Jordan's global stage, specifically his brand. Noam's father introduced him to Michael and the Bulls, and the Jordan brand caught his eye, as he now owns 'many pairs of Jordan's.'
It's no secret that Wemby could be the next player to have this level of fame and impact across the globe. During this year's games, Nike has run a series of ads that Victor appears in, narrated by Willem Dafoe, and they're reaching more and more people by the day. But Netter had something to say about how Wemby had caught his mother's attention.
Netter says his mom is not a basketball fan but was drawn to him by his off-the-court attitude, humbleness, and ability to deal with pressure. His mother, someone with no interest in basketball, is enticed by the character and French pride he carries for his country.
When thinking of some of those sports figures who have impacted the game to such a level that even those who are not fans of the game take notice, you think of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Lionel Messi. Victor Wembanyama could be one of those players.
The Spurs have something special on their hands: a player who's driven to succeed and show the world what he's capable of. Even those who aren't fans of the game are beginning to take notice of what the young Frenchman could be for years to come.
