Vassell and Sochan set the season expectations for Spurs at media day
Devin Vassell is the biggest story heading into training camp, with the recent report informing fans he won't be ready to go at the start of the season. The good news is there haven't been any setbacks, as far as what's been reported, it's the normal timetable for his offseason surgery. So, fans should expect to see him back in the lineup shortly after the games begin.
That's perfect because to realize the goals that he and Sochan just set during media day, he'll need to be on the floor. The Spurs have gone five seasons without making the playoffs and they're ready to end the streak. "Playoffs. That's it. That's all I see," was his response when asked about the expectations for the season. That's exactly what Spurs fans want to hear.
San Antonio is ready to take a leap
You can only hold on to the excuse of being a young team for so long in the NBA. Your tenure matters, and Vassell is entering his fifth year in the league. Keldon Johnson will officially be considered a sixth-year player once the games begin. There is no more room for excuses regarding play. Whether the team gels enough and whether the pieces fit is a different concern—those guys need to perform.
KJ understands that, as he's set to begin training camp in the best shape he's been in in years. During his interview, he spoke about being ready and willing to do anything possible to help this team win. The players are settling into their roles, and when everyone accepts what they're responsible for, team cohesion takes another step.
Sochan is another example of that. When he was at the podium, he described defense, consistency and energy as the aspects of his game he's looking to enhance or build on. That's why he's here and though he's only entering his third year in the NBA, he also has his sights set on the postseason.
"We're going in trying to win as much as we can, make the playoffs, and see what we can do." - Jeremy Sochan
It's clear that tanking for Cooper Flagg is far from the minds of these players. That should be expected of a team that added Chris Paul in the offseason. You don't add a notoriously competitive veteran if you expect to lose a bunch of games.
San Antonio is going to surprise teams with their effort and production. This is a good team, and frankly, they're being slept on. That's going to change starting October 24.
