3 Young players the Spurs must develop, 3 to give up on
By Cal Durrett
Develop: Devin Vassell
Although he only played 36 games last season, Devin Vassell showed plenty. In his third season, the former lottery pick showed that he could consistently create for himself to the tune of a career-high 18.5 points per game.
His shooting numbers were particularly encouraging. He shot well on pull-up jumpers and proved that he could be an efficient high-volume 3-point shooter by making 38.5% of his 7 attempts. All of those things are encouraging, and if he is brought back on an affordable deal, there is no reason to give up on him.
Especially after his "we hooping over here" comment reverse-jinxed the Spurs into landing Wembanyama. In all seriousness, Vassell is a far more valuable player now that the team has a centerpiece to play him off of. Having a player who can knock down spot-up threes and score off of pin-downs and direct handoffs would make for the ideal tertiary option for the Spurs.
Particularly after Wembanyama becomes fully involved in the team's offense since Vassell's skill set could be enhanced by Wembanyama's presence rather than being negatively affected. Based on that, Vassell is definitely a player San Antonio should continue to develop.
