4. Portland Trail Blazers choose Matas Buzelis
The Blazers are in the early stages of a rebuild and have to decide which young talents to build around. Anfernee Simons was the team’s leading scorer, but can they play him next to Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe? If not, someone has to go. Portland must also figure out if Deandre Ayton is their long-term center. The Trail Blazers need size on the wing and likely select it here.
Buzelis was the number two prospect in most mock drafts coming into the season, but a disastrous year for the G League Ignite impacted his stock. The 6’10 forward averaged 14.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.0 blocks in 32.0 minutes per game.
He displayed plenty of flashes on both ends but struggled to consistently make shots. The Ignite’s lack of pure playmaking hurt, but Buzelis will need time to develop. Going to a rebuilding team with minutes available could expedite his development.
Teams will be intrigued by his size, versatility, and defensive potential, but the teenager must improve his jumper and overall play to reach his ceiling. Buzelis could become a key piece of the Blazers' rebuild. They must juggle developing multiple prospects, but Buzelis fills a need and has significant potential.
