26. Washington Wizards (via LA Clippers) choose Tyler Kolek
The Wizards took Alex Sarr second overall in this mock draft and have an outstanding big man locked in. They need a young ball-handler with versatility. Tyus Jones becomes a free agent this summer, and the Wizards have no true backup point guard. Adding a young talent to develop at the one is a must as they continue to rebuild.
Kolek took his game to another level in his senior season where he averaged 15.3 points, 7.7 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in 33.0 minutes per game. He shot 49.6 percent from the field, 38.8 percent on his threes, and 85.1 percent from the free throw line. The 6’3 guard is a strong pick-and-roll playmaker with an improving pull-up jumper.
There are knocks. His defensive game has holes and teams will target the undersized guard. Does he have the lateral quickness to stay in front of his man? Kolek turned 23 in March. He is virtually the same age as Deni Avija, who is wrapping up his fourth NBA season.
Tyler Kolek is the best point guard available and could grow into an impactful part of the Wizards rotation. They could shoot for a higher upside prospect, but getting a strong rotation piece in the late first round is how to build out a roster.
