25. New York Knicks (via Mavericks) select DaRon Holmes
The Knicks may need a backup big man this summer. Mitchell Robinson remains under contract, but Isaiah Hartenstein is an unrestricted free agent. His play will likely earn him a significant raise, which could make it difficult for New York to re-sign him. If Hartenstein moves on, do not be surprised to see the Knicks target a developmental big man in the draft.
Holmes is another player who has vaulted up draft boards this season. The 6’10 big man added a consistent jumper as he averaged 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 0.9 steals, and 2.1 blocks in 32.5 minutes per game in his junior season for Dayton. Having a stretch four or five capable of rebounding and protecting the rim is the desire of every NBA team.
Is Holmes big enough to play the five in the NBA? He is listed at 6’10 and 220 pounds, but may not have the mass to deal with the league’s biggest players. He must add strength and improve his lower half to hold up.
DaRon Holmes profiles more as a backup big man in the NBA, but that is precisely what the Knicks need. His versatility and rim protection make him a fantastic fit, especially if New York adds a superstar.
