19. Philadelphia 76ers select Johnny Furphy
The Sixers are gearing up to chase a third star this summer, but they must fill out their roster. Joel Embiid is the only player under a guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 season. Tyrese Maxey will return in restricted free agency. It is on Daryl Morey and his front office to put the right pieces around them to contend.
Furphy does not need the ball to be effective. He is comfortable spotting up or working off screens to get open. He made 35.2 percent of his 125 NCAA 3-point attempts as a freshman at Kansas. The 19-year-old could improve drastically by staying in college, but projects to be a mid-first-round pick this year.
Furphy is a plus athlete at 6’9. His defense, playmaking, and overall game must improve to reach his ceiling, but the teenager could be an NBA starter for a decade-plus. He has all the tools but needs time to develop.
The Jayhawks imploded down the stretch with multiple starters sidelined by injury. Furphy was healthy but did not make the same impact. He needs star talent drawing the defense to be at his best. The teenager won’t have to worry about that in Philadelphia playing next to Embiid and Maxey. The Jayhawks wing could pop in the right situation, so expect him to be a top-30 selection if he stays in this draft.
