2024 NBA Mock Draft 5.0: Spurs find point guard, Raptors keep lottery selection

10. Atlanta Hawks choose Ja’Kobe Walter
The Hawks are facing a turning point offseason. They are back in the Play-In Tournament and their best-case scenario may be a third consecutive first-round playoff exit. Atlanta wants to contend, but it is not happening with Trae Young and Dejounte Murray sharing the backcourt. The Hawks could make some bold trades this summer and should target the best player available with this selection.
Walter is the 3-and-D wing every NBA team is searching for. The 19-year-old is 6’5 with a 6’10 wingspan. He can guard multiple positions, space the floor, and score 12 to 15 every night.
He struggled as a freshman at Baylor by shooting 37.6 percent from the field and 34.1 percent on his threes. A cold snap midseason was behind his 3-point woes, but he should quickly be a plus shooter in the NBA.
Walter does not have superstar upside, but getting a strong 3-and-D wing in a draft class loaded with uncertainty is a wise move. The Hawks need more two-way players, and head coach Quinn Snyder will find the perfect role for Walter when he is ready. His shooting should pop when playing off Trae Young in Atlanta. He may top out as a key contributor on a contender, but Walter should make an impact for years.
