3. San Antonio Spurs take Nikola Topic
The Spurs desperately need a point guard. They attempted the Jeremy Sochan experiment to begin the season, but it failed miserably. Tre Jones is the only true option on their roster, but the franchise sees him as a backup. Expect the Spurs to target their lead ball-handler of the present and future with this selection.
Topic started the season so well for Mega Bemax that Crvena Zvezda recalled his loan and gave the teenager a shot to play EuroLeague basketball. It lasted only three games because Topic suffered a knee injury in January and has missed two months of action. Still, there was a ton to like from his early tape.
The 6’6 point guard averaged 16.4 points, 6.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.0 steal in 30.8 minutes per game this season. He is one of the best passers and playmakers in this class. Topic loves to attack the rim and has the size to guard multiple positions in the NBA.
There are questions about his shooting, which has been inconsistent over the last four years, but Topic could be a difference-maker quickly. The 18-year-old has an immense ceiling. Teams will want to see him back on the floor and healthy before the draft. If Topic returns and plays well, do not be surprised to hear his name called early on June 26.
