22. New York Knicks grab Tyler Smith

Smith is the one player who improved his draft stock on the G League Ignite this season. It was a disastrous campaign and has commissioner Adam Silver pondering the team’s future, but Smith’s game popped as a stretch big man with a versatile skill set.

The 19-year-old averaged 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.0 block in 22.0 minutes per game against professionals. He shot 47.7 percent from the field and 35.6 percent on his 3-point tries. Making 1.4 triples each night on a strong percentage without a true point guard on their roster was impressive and has scouts wondering if Smith can do more in the right NBA system.

The 6’11 big man struggled on defense but has a 7’1 wingspan and athletic ability. It is fair to question how much was the Ignite’s issues and what percentage was Smith not playing his role. Scouts hoped to see more, but his offensive skill set is what has NBA teams excited.

The New York Knicks will guard under coach Tom Thibodeau, so going to the Knicks with a stout defender like Ryan Dunn could be a blessing for Tyler Smith. New York needs a stretch big man and each could use their strengths to improve the other’s stock.
