2024 NBA Mock Draft 6.0: Spurs attack needs, Hornets make shock selection
By Tyler Watts
9. Memphis Grizzlies choose Dalton Knecht
The Grizzlies do not expect to remain in the lottery. They made the playoffs three straight years before an injury-plagued season. Memphis has one of the top young stars in the league in Ja Morant and would love to add someone capable of helping immediately. They plan on being in contention in 2025 and need a floor-spacing wing to have any shot in the loaded Western Conference.
Knecht was one of the best scorers in the NCAA for two straight years. Memphis needs shooting, and the 6’6 wing made 39.7 percent of his 3-pointers during his senior year. Expect Knecht to help space the floor wherever he lands.
There are questions about the 23-year-old’s defense. His age will certainly ding his draft stock, but Knecht is a near-perfect fit in Memphis. He will knock down shots and draw defenders for Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. to feast in the paint. The Grizzlies' stout defense should make his fit more seamless.
Dalton Knecht does not have superstar upside, but he should be a plus contributor for years to come. The 23-year-old played five seasons of college basketball but is still years away from his peak. Expect him to keep improving. Knecht already checks several boxes for Memphis, which makes this a no-brainer selection.
