5. Detroit Pistons draft Matas Buzelis

Things are a bit uncertain here with Trajan Langdon taking over as the Pistons lead executive. They have not reached the playoffs since 2019 and haven’t won a postseason series since 2008. Detroit has young talent from selecting near the top of the lottery in recent years, but can they make the pieces fit?

Buzelis was viewed by many as a top-two selection coming into this season before a disastrous campaign with the G League Ignite. They had an ill-fitting roster, which lacked a true point guard. It led to tons of losses and dropped the stock of all their top prospects.

Buzelis averaged 14.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.1 blocks in 32.0 minutes per game during the regular season. He missed some time because of injury and his efficiency left plenty to be desired.

The 19-year-old is far from a finished product and still intrigues teams. Finding a 6’10 forward with a developing jumper, plus athleticism, and strong shot-blocking instincts is not easy. Buzelis could fill several needs for the Pistons, including forming a strong defensive wing duo with Ausar Thompson.

The Detroit Pistons could go in several directions with this selection. Matas Buzelis fits next to Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and Isaiah Stewart. It is difficult to say who the franchise will prioritize moving forward, but finding another young talent with potential is a must with this selection.
