Power Forward - Davis Bertans (2016-2019)
A quicker and more athletic Matt Bonner, as he was once called, Davis Bertans was the perfect Spur when he was in San Antonio. Drafted in 2011 by the Indiana Pacers, Bertans was a part of the Kawhi Leonard draft-day trade after his rights were traded to San Antonio along with Leonard in exchange for then-Spurs guard George Hill.
Bertans did not land in San Antonio until 2016, however, further developing with multiple European teams. When he was finally given a Spurs jersey, Bertans brought a lot to the table. The Latvian big man was molding into a quality stretch forward right before the Spurs' eyes, thanks to his ability to bring his defender out of the key and hit shots beyond 15 feet with ease.
Bertans' best season was his 2018–2019 campaign with the Spurs, which saw him average 9 points per game while shooting a career-best 46% from the floor. Bertans was the type of player who, if he hit multiple three-point shots every game, one would say that was just Bertans being himself. With so much promise, the Spurs still decided to trade him away, unfortunately, which is a move that they seemingly regret to this day. To make matters worse, Bertans was let go in a poor deal for the Spurs.
This trade brought DeMarre Carroll to San Antonio, where he immediately became a non-contributor. This move was mainly made for San Antonio to make cap room to sign then-free-agent forward Marcus Morris. Morris would eventually back out of the deal to sign with the New York Knicks instead so all together, this was just plain wrong for San Antonio.
The Spurs got the short end of the stick out of this deal, while Bertans got what he deserved: a big pay raise from the Washington Wizards. Bertans now plays for the Charlotte Hornets, whereas the Spurs (28th in three-point shooting in 2023) are missing him to this day.
