Fans will remember Victor Wembanyama for many of the cool things he's done and will do over the course of his basketball career on the floor. But in the short time he's been in the United States, he's also proven to be a fascinating person off the court. One of the most recent examples is his trip to Washington Square Park in New York to play chess with fans following a victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

It wasn't planned or prompted by anything, in particular, other than the fact that the Alien loves to play chess and wanted to play that day. After the festivities were concluded, Wembanyama took to social media to share his new idea for a chess tournament featuring NBA players.

Well, recently, Luka Doncic, of all people, was seen defeating an opponent in chess in less than a minute, instigating the chess community into naming him as Wemby's next challenger.

Wembanyama and Doncic could start a new rivalry

These two are going to play against each other an awful lot on the court over the next decade-plus, as long as good health for both players prevails. With San Antonio on the rise and the Lakers being gifted a generational superstar, they'll likely clash in the playoffs at some point, truly revitalizing the rivalry from the early 2000s.

But this is something completely different that would be awesome because it's innovative and involves two unique and supremely talented basketball stars. There's no telling how many NBA players would be interested in some sort of tournament, but if they could put something together in the offseason, it would be fascinating to watch.

Fans would get a chance to see these extraordinary athletes compete in a radically different way. But there would need to be big names involved to bring in a large enough viewing audience to make it worth it. Fortunately, these are two players with a couple of the largest basketball names in the world.

The NBA should set up a bracket-style tournament with the Alien and Luka Magic on either side, hoping they meet in the final. If you've ever watched the Netflix original series Queen's Gambit, you understand how riveting it can be to watch good players execute their strategies in the game of Chess. This kind of event could be successful if done right.

Even if you can't get enough players together for a full tournament, placing these two against each other for a winner-takes-all match or best-of-series would be interesting enough. You can sign me up to watch that, and I would bet that I'm not alone.
