Now that the San Antonio Spurs season has ended, fans' attention will likely shift to the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery. However, perhaps it should also focus on the brewing situation with the Atlanta Hawks. Last summer, the Spurs made a shocking trade that sent All-Star Dejounte Murray to the Hawks for three first-rounders, a pick swap, and Danilo Gallinari.

That trade, while initially divisive amongst Spurs fans, already looks like a great deal ten months later and could be even better if Hawks superstar Trae Young finds himself on the move soon. There have been rumors of him being unhappy, and a bombshell report from The Ringer suggests Atlanta may be amenable to trading Young this summer.

The Hawks are seemingly considering all options despite owing San Antonio an unprotected 2025 and 2027 first-round pick and a first-round pick swap in 2026. Of course, the Hawks could fetch as many as four firsts in return for Young, but not owning their future picks could complicate an Atlanta rebuild.

Former Spur Dejounte Murray may be on the move too

If rumblings about Atlanta's willingness to trade Young weren't enough, the Ringer also has an interesting tidbit regarding Murray.

Murray had a breakout season with the Spurs before being moved to Atlanta, and while he's been good, he hasn't been as impactful as last season. That reinforces the Spurs' decision to trade him when they did, even if they went 22-60 without him this season. They appeared hesitant to re-sign him in 2024, and the Hawks seem to feel the same way.

That might mean Young and Murray could play elsewhere next season, which should be music to Spurs fans' ears. Controlling a rebuilding team's draft picks for three years is rare, but San Antonio may be in that situation in just a few years. That could coincide with the end of their ongoing rebuild. Either way, it's clear San Antonio made the right decision, and this Ringer report only confirms that.
