The conclusion: should Poeltl be traded?

This is a tough question to answer, and I'm going to give a cop-out answer: it depends. If the Spurs think that the developmental benefits he can provide his young teammates are worth a contract potentially costing something in the neighborhood of $20 million per year, then I could easily see the Spurs shelling out a big contract for Poeltl. But if the team thinks the money (and his spot in the rotation) could be better spent elsewhere within the next few years, I could just as easily see the Spurs moving him before the trade deadline.

If I were forced to answer one way or the other at this moment, I would say I'm leaning toward keeping Poeltl on the team. The developmental benefits he could provide to Vassell, Johnson, the rookies, and the Spurs' future draft picks could be instrumental in their continued development. But if the Spurs find a team on the market for a center and they're willing to part with a significant trade package for Poeltl, I'll understand them making the move.

No matter what happens, I'm comfortable with sharing my strongest opinion about Poeltl: he is the best center the Spurs have had on the roster since David Robinson. Even if he isn't a part of the Spurs' long-term future plans, he will always have my respect as one of the best bigs to put on a Spurs jersey.
